Former Becker County Sheriff Charged with Swindling

Posted: Updated:

Former Becker County Sheriff Tim Gordon is finding himself on the other side of the law. He has been charged with swindling. The charges arose from the sale of Gordon's boat to Becker County for an inflated price and through use of false documents that hid Gordon's ownership.

Gordon was charged on Friday, January 17 in Becker County District Court with Theft by Swindle and Presenting a False Claim, which are both felonies. He was also charged with Misconduct of a Public Official, which is a gross misdemeanor.

Gordon resigned as Becker County Sheriff in October of 2012 after admitting he was being investigated by the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. He served the county for 10 years prior to resigning.

Gordon headed a water safety grant for the county which was just over $25,000. At the time of Gordon's resignation, a Becker County Commissioner told Valley News Live the money was to buy and equip a boat for water safety.

Significant delays in part of the law enforcement investigation were the primary factor in the timing of the filing of charges against Gordon in this case. The Stearns County Attorney's Office is prosecuting the case because of the Becker County Attorney's Office conflict of interest.

Gordon's first court appearance has been set in Becker County District Court on January 27.
