5 Steps to a Healthier 2014

It is New Year's resolution season and our health and fitness expert wants to help you be successful in living a healthier 2014. Cathy Piatt (RN BSN, ACE Certified Personal Trainer,  Group Fitness instructor) gives us these five simple steps:

(1) SET GOALS that are reasonable and attainable. Choose something that you feel very confident that you can do. For example, if you never go to the gym, a goal of going to the gym every day is probably out of reach. Instead, shoot for 2-3 days a week, attain that and then move forward from there.   

(2) Focus on making ONE CHANGE AT A TIME. You will be more successful if you take it slow and don't overwhelm yourself. Remember that this is a permanent lifestyle change so you'll have plenty of time to get all you want to accomplish done.   

(3) When it comes to exercise FIND SOMETHING THAT YOU ENJOY DOING. Exercise is one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself and you will be more likely to keep doing it if it's an activity you have fun with. 

(4) GET HELP from the experts. Personal trainers, wellness coaches and nutritionists are just a few of the options out there and the money spent with them is well worth it. For a less expensive route refer to one of the many books on the market. Don't fall for diet or exercise scams.  Remember if it sounds too good to be true, it's not going to work. 

(5) FIND A WORKOUT PARTNER to take the journey with you. You're more likely to get to the gym if you have someone there waiting for you. There's nothing like a good support system.  Working together makes it more fun and more rewarding.
