New Year Brings Brutal Cold

Posted: Updated:

It appears you'll have to put a parka on your New Years Eve plans.  We're starting out with a very cold Monday and it's only expected to get worse.

Get ready to toast the New Year with some brutally cold temperatures. The wind chill is expected to drop to 45-degrees below zero.

Mick Kjar, Storm Team: "The coldest morning of the week is going to be New Year Eve morning, Tuesday morning. Probably 25, 30-below."

Some folks, like runner Trish McGuire take our cold temperatures in stride.

Trish McGuire: "You have to dress for it if you walk or run."

Reporter: "It doesn't bother you?"

McGuire: "No, wear the right equipment, you're good."

However, if you're hoping for warm temperatures soon, it could be a long wait.

Greg Gust, National Weather Service: "It look like that pattern of cold air is likely to be persistent all the way through January and well into February. The three month outlook right now is… the bulk of the cold air is just sitting across the Dakotas and back into Montana."

And Gust says we can also expect higher than an  average snowfall through February.

It appears winter is just getting started.
