Keeping Kids Busy During Winter Break

Posted: Updated:

A break for school may have parents working overtime trying to find activities for their kids to do. As the temps force kids indoors many parents are counting down the days until they return to school.

But Valley News Teams Kristi Larson found a list of fun activities for your kids to do during school breaks.

Many parents today took advantage of the extended open gym hours the YMCA offered.

"My wife goes pretty much every morning, brings the kids, and they play, we use the drop in child care as well as the Exerzone and they love it, they have a lot of fun." says Paul Nynas.

"You gotta keep your kids active over the holiday's," Mark Teckenburg agrees, "try to avoid the video games and watching too much TV, we get out we go sledding, 4-wheeling, take the kids sledding behind the 4-wheeler, just keeping them out of the house as much as we can."

Because parents know how important exercise is for kids.

"Keep them moving, keep them running and burn off some of that energy it's a great time." laughs Carrie Jaemicke the YMCA Youth Development Director.

There are plenty of places around the Fargo-Moorhead area that have open gym, swimming, skating, rock climbing and more to keep your little one busy. But parents agree it's smart to keep their brains active over the break as well.

"The kids are going to get a little bit of a loss especially over the summer they'll have a learning loss or reading loss." says Cindy Mason with the Fargo Public Library.

The library encourages parents to be evolved and work on class lessons, math problems, and reading so they keep their minds active.

But above all parents say spend that extra time with their kids to become closer as a family.

"Embrace the time that we have with our kids, and play games with them, and I mean just be a good parent to them." Mark laughs.

Many parents will be happy for kids to return to school, but this way they will be both physically and mentally ready.

If you are looking for some ideas for indoor fun Valley New Live found some:

Chuck E. Cheeses and Space Aliens have arcade games ready to be played. Movie theaters have matinee prices before the evening times.

Roller skating is another physical activity fun for the whole family at Skateland Skate Center. Also families could challenge each other in a bowling game at any of the alleys.
