Perks Of Year End Donations

Posted: Updated:

New toys, electronics and clothes fill your homes after the holidays, but many now have older things they don't need. Instead of putting it all into piles and storing it away, thrift shops say donations are welcome, and needed.

"A lot of times people wait until the spring and summer to do donating because they are cleaning out, but that means in the winter we're really looking for more donations." says Katie Nelson with The Arc of Cass County.

Thrift shops through the valley depend on the community to bring in new items so they can continue to support their programs.

"The Arc of Cass County serves people with developmental disabilities, we provide social and educational programs." Nelson explains.

So money from The Arc Attic Treasures all goes to helping those people, but many residents donate for other reasons, like to clean out their homes.

"We take products that are gently used, we take anything from Christmas decorations, children's clothes, jewelry, shoes, toys, pretty much anything that people have just sitting around." Nelson says.

All it takes is a few bags, and you could see it return to you in your taxes next year.

"You can get a receipt and all you have to do is fill out the information of what you donated, and then submit it with your taxes and you get a tax break." Nelson smiles.

So whether you choose to donate to benefit yourself or the community, it's all appreciated.

"It keeps things from being wasted or otherwise going to the landfill or just winding up in a closet for forever." says employee Jennifer Lamb.

And Nelson agrees, "You get a tax donation, your house gets clean, you have room for your new stuff it's perfect."
