UND Names New Head Football Coach

Posted: Updated:

It was an emotional homecoming as the University of North Dakota's new head football coach Kyle "Bubba" Schweigert arrived in Grand Forks.  The announcement was made on Christmas Eve, but the university introduced Schweigert at a special news conference Friday.

Schweigert spent 15 seasons as an assistant coach in eight NCAA playoff teams and six NCC title squads. He says that is a winning tradition he hopes to bring back under his leadership.

"We're going to put together a staff that runs really hard to put a team out there that you can be proud of."

Schweigert is the 26th head coach in for UND football. He replaces Chris Mussman, who was fired in November. Mussman wrapped up his sixth season with a career record of 31-34.  Director of Athletics at UND, Brian Faison, says from a competitive standpoint it was time for a change.

Valley News Live Sports Director Jamal Spencer will have more on Schweigert Friday on Valley News Live at 6:00 and 10:00 p.m. You can also read more about Schweigert by clicking on the link to the right of this story.
