Posted: Updated:

As the hype of the holidays winds down-- the extra boxes, bags and holly is piling up in your trash can. All that unwrapping can create quite a mess.

But the City of Fargo is asking you to separate items instead of stuffing your garbage bins to the brim.

"Like 11, 000 pounds today of extra cardboard was picked up." says Jennifer Pickett the city Recycling Supervisor,

The Solid Waste Department isn't getting a winter break, because they are busy collecting all the holiday trash. They say residents have been recycling boxes and cardboard that daily overflow drop off sites.

"Everybody that's a resident of Fargo has access to our curbside recycling program, that we accept cardboard in, so that's an outlet for cardboard, if you have too much and don't want it to pile up in your garage, we have 24 drop sites in Fargo that accept cardboard." Pickett says.

Worried about getting rid of the Christmas tree? That will be taken care of for you in January. The city of Fargo sends out a truck to pick up trees starting January 6th. Just follow the city rules for tree pick up.

"At least 5 feet away from the garbage can, remove any plastic bags that you might have on it, and or lights or decorations." Pickett says.

The city will be collecting the trees for two weeks on residents regular garbage pick up day. Pickett reminds people if they are missed to be patient the truck will be coming through the city twice.

And there's no worry about finding the right place to get rid of any broken Christmas lights. Pickett says those or any other kind of decorations can be put into regular garbage cans.
