Bemidji Family Receives the Best Gift

Posted: Updated:

BEMIDJI, MN - Christmas is a time for family, and one man went to great lengths Tuesday to drive that point home. East Grand Forks native and father Joe Knutson drove non-stop from Ohio to be with his family in Bemidji following a tragedy that touched them all.

Knutson's wife Anna had died only a month and a half ago, so when Knutson told his family he wouldn't be joining them this holiday, they understood; it was a difficult time of year for all of them. But Knutson had a surprise in store: he'd already decided to make the trek.

After nearly 17 hours on the road, and much to the amazement of his family, he finally walked through the door around 7 p.m. on Christmas eve.

In the video Knutson posted on YouTube, he explains what inspired him to film his unexpected arrival. "It was just over a month since Anna passed," Knutson says. "Not being together this Christmas, I think, has been particularly hard on my family, my mom, my sister in particular. I'm just really looking forward to surprising them."

In a phone interview with Valley News Live, Knutson added that he saw how the story "touched the heart strings" of everyone who heard it and that his wife Anna always lit up the room.
