Moorhead schools say they won't talk to us about school security

Also, in a recent article in a local newspaper, The Fargo school district says they dispute our recent report.

The Fargo school district turned over school surveillance video and opened a police investigation on Friday. According to a local newspaper article, Superintendent Jeff Schatz says a faculty member noticed that Valley News Live Reporter Mellaney Moore wasn't wearing identification and directed her to the office to sign in. He says it was flat out "not true" that Mellaney had not been stopped by any faculty. We wanted to show what really happened- so here is the raw audio and video of the conversation Mellaney had when she approached the faculty member:

Teacher: "Were you looking for a classroom?"
Mellaney: "Well actually, I think I got a little turned around. Where is your front office?"
Teacher: "Um, right here…"
Mellaney: "If you could just point me in the right direction."
Teacher: "OK. Are you looking for the kindergarten wing or the fifth grade wing?"
Mellaney: "Just the front door."
Teacher: "Ok, that's the front door."
Mellaney: "OK."
Teacher: "Yep."
Mellaney: "Thank you."
Teacher: "Yep."

As you can see, Mellaney was never asked if she had signed in. The teacher was trying to be helpful by pointing her in the direction of the office after she asked. She then walked unescorted down a hallway toward the door and left. A similar incident happened in the West Fargo district when she encountered a faculty member to ask where their front office was:

Mellaney: "Excuse me. Where is the main office?"
Teacher: "Oh, go down to the end of the hall and take a right and it's going to be your first door on the right."
Mellaney: "OK. This way?"
Teacher: "Yep."
Mellaney: "OK. Thank you."

We have been trying to talk with Moorhead schools since before and after our school visits. Moorhead Superintendent Lynn Kovash said on a radio program on Friday she was willing to talk to Valley News Live about security in the Moorhead district. Today she changed her mind because of the open police investigation.

West Fargo didn't want to talk either and told me they don't have any more to add.
