UPDATE: Alleged Sexual Assault in West Fargo Unfounded

Posted: Updated:

The West Fargo Police Department has concluded its investigation on an alleged sexual assault that happened Monday morning, December 16.

Further investigation leads the assigned officers to believe the incident did not occur as initially reported. The department says they likely will not be charging the woman who reported the crime, and the department will close the current case as unfounded.

The original report alleged that two men forced entry into the woman's apartment and a sexual assault occurred.

West Fargo Police Department forwarded a press release relating to the possible incident in the 400 block of 6 Street East. The press release was done prior to sufficient investigation into the incident and made in error by the West Fargo Police Department.

The West Fargo Police Department has changed the procedure for the issuance of a press release and apologizes for any inconvenience this error may have caused.

West Fargo Police are walking-back an earlier news release about an alleged sexual assault at an apartment building.

Just after 7:00 a.m. Monday morning police sent out a news release about an incident that happened Sunday night. It said officers responded to a welfare check after reports of two unknown men knocking at a woman's door.

According to the news release police found the woman visibly upset.

She told investigators the two men had forced their way into her apartment when she opened the door.  One of them allegedly grabbed her hair and held her while the other unzipped his pants, exposing himself, and forcing his midsection towards her mouth.

Police say the woman fought back, screaming, and the men left the apartment within about 30 seconds.

About 9:30 Monday morning police released an updated statement.  It said the original information was released in error and investigators are still looking into the incident to determine what has taken place.
