Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Kids Sign With Santa Claus

Posted: Updated:

It's that time of year when you can not only see the holiday spirit around us, you can hear it and feel it. But, some children have a harder time than others taking it all in. Not everyone experiences meeting Santa Claus the same way.

Jacob Williams- Jacob's Dad: "Yeah, it's just basically sitting on his lap, it's important for people who use sign language to communicate." Jacob Williams is seeing Santa for the third time, and he says, "Santa Claus is cool."

Santa's wife, Mrs. Claus is also cool. Cathy Diedrichsen- Mrs. Claus: "He just loves the look on the kids faces, and especially the deaf kids, being able to communicate with them." Santa can communicate because he is also deaf. Diedrichsen: "He loves doing this, my husband loves kids, he always has."

A few years back around Christmas Jacob was sick. Williams: "So someone arranged for Santa to come to his house." After all, it is the season of giving. Diedrichsen: "He would have missed it otherwise, you know, so it meant a lot to them."

And Jacob's grandma is almost more excited than he is. Diedrichsen: "Sometimes it means as much or more to the parents than the kids. It's not uncommon to see parents or grandparents in tears." A big group where everyone is to be able to communicate with jolly old Saint Nick. Williams: "Jake can really tell him what he wants for Christmas, and that's important."

Not every kid has the same experience, but each and everyone have a long list of toys they can't wait to explain to Santa Claus.

Jacob's dad says the deaf community of Fargo is much larger than you might think, and it's growing. The event is put on every year by the sarcoma and Quota Club.
