Fargo Public Schools Respond to Security Investigation

Posted: Updated:

The day after a parent and Fargo school employee voiced concerns over school security to Valley News Live, the Fargo Public School district is making changes.

Yesterday we sent Valley News Team's Mellaney Moore into three local schools- one in West Fargo, one in Fargo and one in Moorhead.

She had a hidden camera and was not stopped by any school official at two of the three schools.

Mellaney sat down with the superintendent of Fargo Public Schools today about what happened.

The superintendent told her that what Valley News Live found in our investigation is concerning and they will be addressing these issues directly.

He told Mellaney that less than 24 hours after the report he had spoken to principals, faculty and staff about procedures for visitors coming to schools.

"We constantly work on training our people to do that and why that happened yesterday... it shouldn't have. You should have been asked and you should have been asked to sign in," says Fargo Public Schools Superintendent Jeff Schatz.

He says they are always concerned about who comes into their buildings, but says he doesn't know if locked doors is what the community wants.

"We could lock all of our doors, we could put police officers at every door, but I don't know if that's exactly what the community would want. People still want access to our schools, so there's a balance there," he says.

Schatz says the district is trying out a security system in a few schools where visitors have to get buzzed in at the front door.  They are considering expanding that into more Fargo elementary schools.

Despite repeated calls to Moorhead schools we have yet to hear from them about why the doors to their school were unlocked. Instead, late today Valley News Live did talk to someone in Moorhead city government- A police detective contacted us to investigate a Moorhead school complaint of trespassing against Valley News Live.
