Update: Fosston Fire Destroys Three Apartments

Posted: Updated:

The Minnesota State Fire Marshall's Office investigated the scene and is ruling the fire accidental, according to the Polk County Sheriff's Department. They are not making any further comment at this time.

The Fosston Chiropractic Clinic and 3 apartments in the building were destroyed by a fire that started at 10:30 Sunday night.. Two other connecting businesses, also suffered minor damage.

Fosston Fire Chief, Jim Aagenes says their first order of business was to make sure everyone was out of the building, when they arrived on the scene at 10:40 Sunday night.

The Fire Chief says there are 2 apartments above that Chiropractic Clinic and 1 behind it. He says all 3 residents of those apartments are accounted for and safe.

Jim Aagenes, Fosston Fire Chief: "Two of the residents were not home. They were at work and the other one was not sure what happened."

One of those residents who was at work… was Jason Steinbrenner. He was working the registration desk, just down the street at the hospital, when the roof of the building collapsed and fire destroyed two upstairs apartments and his in the back of the building.

In the light of day, Steinbrenner told me he didn't have renters insurance.

Reporter: "Not a great holiday present?"

Jason Steinbrenner, Fire Victim: "Nope. Not at all, but it's only stuff. It can all be replaced."

Gabe Weiner, the owner of the Chiropractic Clinic on the main floor also says, his business is a total loss. He says heavy smoke and water damage destroyed it. And he says the basement, where he kept his records is half full of water.

A connecting barber shop and insurance agent's office received minor smoke and water damage.

ORIGINAL STORY:

Fire fighters are mopping up a major fire in northwestern Minnesota.  The blaze was reported at 10:30 Sunday night in the Fosston Chiropractic building on Main Street.  Fire crews from Fosston, McIntosh and Erskine responded. Highway Two through town had to be closed down and rerouted for 3-hours.

Jim Aagenes, Fosston Fire Chief: "The building involved is a Chiropractic Clinic, owned by Gabe Weiner. That building is fully involved… I should say the second story of it."

The Fire Chief says there are 2 apartments above that Chiropractic Clinic and one behind it. He says all 3 residents of those apartments are accounted for and safe.

Reporter: "They didn't give any indication it started in their apartment?"

Jim Aagenes: "Nope, we don't know yet. It's just too early. Two of the residents were not home. They were at work and the other one, she's not sure what happened."

The Fire Chief says the entire second story of this building is gutted. He says the roof collapsed and fell on it. He says there is no fire damage to the main floor. But there is a lot of water and smoke damage.

A connecting barber shop and insurance store also suffered water damage.
