With a look at things to come in February when North Dakota will have a shortened bench due to the Olympic Winter Games, freshman goaltender Lexie Shaw led UND to a 2-0 shutout against the Russian Women's National Team on Saturday afternoon at Ralph Engelstad Arena.
UND was without Michelle Karvinen, Susanna Tapani and Tanja Eisenschmid, in order to mimic the possible lineup that North Dakota will have in February; and the shorter bench did not hinder UND.
Freshman Halli Krzyzaniak scored on the power play while Josefine Jakobsen scored off a turnover to provide UND with the two goals it needed for the exhibition win.
Russian netminder Nadezhda Alexandrova was solid in net for her squad, turning aside 33 shots, including multiple golden scoring chances for UND and six shots on the penalty kill.
Shaw was stellar in her own right, making 31 saves for the shutout, including five on the power play and a couple backdoor stops late in the game to keep Russia off the scoreboard.
North Dakota started off much better than it did yesterday, outshooting Team Russia 12-10 in the first period, but it wasn't until the second period when UND would get on the board.
While on the power play, Krzyzaniak received a pass at the high slot and blasted a slap shot that went bar down over Alexandrova's glove. The goal gave UND the lead just over two minutes into the second period.
Russia started to gain back some momentum, and even while going on the penalty kill another three times in the period, managed to outshoot UND 15-10 in the frame. Shaw made all 15 saves to keep Russia scoreless.
In the third period, Alexandrova kept UND from running up the score, turning aside countless grade-A scoring chances. It took a defensive error on the part of the Russians to give North Dakota a two-goal lead. Jakobsen intercepted a pass out of the corner of the Russian defensive zone, and quickly fired the puck past Alexandrova before she could set herself for the shot.
North Dakota went 1-6 on the power play, while successfully killing off all four penalties it received in the game.
UND now turns its attention to a big nonconference matchup with Clarkson out in Potsdam, N.Y., on Dec. 8-9.
