Morning-after Pill May Not Work for Overweight Women

Posted: Updated:

A European version of the morning-after pill may not work for women over a certain weight. And the same could be true for emergency contraceptives in the United States.

The French manufacturer of Norlevo plans to put a warning on its packaging next year. Researchers found the drug begins to lose effectiveness in women who weight more than 165 pounds.

And it is completely ineffective in women who weigh more than 176 pounds.

Norlevo is identical to America's morning-after pill version, Plan B One-Step. Teva pharmaceuticals, which manufactures Plan B, did not respond to CNN's request for comment.

The Food and Drug Administration says it is reviewing information on the issue and will determine if any labeling changes are warranted.
