North Dakota State unattached freshman wrestler Mitch Bengtson won the 141-pound title at the Finn Grinaker Cobber Open hosted by Concordia Moorhead on Saturday, leading a pack of 12 Bison wrestlers who placed in the tournament.
All NDSU wrestlers competed unattached on Saturday.
Bengtson (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Apollo HS) went a perfect 4-0 on the day to claim the 141-pound championship. He defeated Jake Hodges of Northern Iowa 5-1 in the first round, pinned Cody Reed of Southwest Minnesota State and Frank Wilczek of Ridgewater College in the quarterfinals and semifinals, and concluded the day with a 9-3 decision over Angel Vega of MSU Moorhead in the championship match.
Steven Monk (165), Hayden Zillmer (174) and Evan Knutson (285) all claimed runner-up finishes on the day. The No. 3-ranked Monk dropped a 6-4 decision to Cooper Moore of Northern Iowa in the finals.
Zillmer fell to Cody Caldwell of Northern Iowa by 4-1 decision in the 174-pound finals, and Knutson lost to Blaize Cabell of Northern Iowa by 3-1 decision in the heavyweight title match.
Redshirt freshmen Clay Cathey (133) and Tyler Lehmann (197) and junior Kurtis Julson (174) all took third place in their respective weight classes.
Several unattached NDSU true freshmen also competed in the Maroon Division for freshmen, where Cole Sladek went a perfect 4-0 to win the 149-pound title.
NDSU will travel to DeKalb, Ill., for a triangular meet on Nov. 23. The Bison will wrestle Northern Iowa at noon and Northern Illinois at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
