Seven Year Old Recognized For Life-Saving 911 Call

Posted: Updated:

One brave 7 year old is being recognized for her quick action. Riley King noticed she couldn't wake her grandmother and called 911.

Wednesday the family sat down and talked with Valley News Teams Kristi Larson, saying they are thankful for her smart thinking, which helped save her grandma's life.

The call happened about 6 weeks ago, but it's all Joy Golden can think about. When her 7 year-old Granddaughter called for help.

"I was sitting at the table coloring with her, and I got this really sharp pain on the top of my head so I told her I needed to go lay down," Joy explains, "I thought a migraine was coming on. And she apparently came in and found me a short time after."

"I saw her lay down on the bed, I tried to be loud and she didn't wake up and I was kind of nervous." Riley says shyly.

In the recorded call you can hear how brave this young girl was: "Hello this is Riley, my grandma, she's laying down on the bed and she has a bloody nose and I don't know what to do. [...] I'm outside right now but I'm not going to panic because I'm just waiting."

Dispatcher: "No you're doing a great job riley."

"I'm just so proud of her," her grandmother told Kristi Larson. "She handled it like a pro."

When paramedics arrived, Joy wasn't breathing, but thankfully Riley's parents had taught her how to dial 911, and with a quick response Joy is still with her family today. Doctors are still stumped to what happened that day.

"I'm just sad that she had to go through all of this, it's a shame." Joy says shaking her head. "But just grateful for even the schools, and how they teach the kids you know and they make sure they know the steps to take."

With her family watching Riley got a special 911 Hero award. A deserving recognition for her brave actions.

Riley says she is going to bring a photo of her with the award to school, and show it off to her friends.
