Fighting Breast Cancer With Humor

Posted: Updated:

Cancer is nothing to laugh about -- that is not debatable. But, a family from the valley is using humor to cope with a family history that almost guarantees they will be diagnosed with breast cancer.

Caryn and Colleen call themselves the "Lewis Women". They are proud, feisty and very funny.

While laughing, Colleen Fettig admits, "we have a sick sense of humor."

Sisters, Colleen and Caryn, admit they have a different way of looking at things. Caryn says she doesn't donate a lot of money to breast cancer research, because she has already donated her breasts. She says, "if we didn't laugh -- it would be really sad."

Their grandmother was diagnosed with breast cancer at 38, one aunt at 35 another at 54 and a cousin at 36. They all died from the disease. Cancer also attacked their mother and one of them.

Colleen says she was not surprised, "it's not if... it's when, so you prepare yourself over the years. That has helped."

Colleen was the sixth woman on her mother's side to be diagnosed with breast cancer. She had a bilateral mastectomy and treatments followed. It made Caryn jump into action too. She didn't have breast cancer, but she had a prophylactic bilateral mastectomy.

Caryn says they want to share their story and remind people to do breast exams and schedule their mammogram.

Colleen says the family history of breast cancer could someday stop -- thanks to her daughter. She has pursued a career in cancer research... Because of her upbringing in a family targeted by the disease. She's optimistic that they will soon be smiling because a cure for cancer has been found.
