Posted: Updated:

At least 1,774 people have been confirmed dead in the wake of Super Typhoon Haiyan, authorities in the Philippines reported Tuesday. Aerial images show entire coastal villages swept away by the storm's huge waves.

President Benigno Aquino declared a state of national disaster on Monday and deployed hundreds of soldiers to the areas hardest hit by the typhoon. The United Nations says more than 600 thousand people were displaced by the storm across the country. Some have no access to food, water, or medicine.

Authorities say at least 9.7 million people were affected by the disaster in some way, and more than 10 thousand people may have been killed.
