Armed Suspect Puts University of Minnesota Campus on High-Alert

Posted: Updated:

MINNEAPOLIS - The University of Minnesota says police are looking for a suspect after an attempted armed robbery of a student on the West Bank campus.

Valley News Live affiliate, Kare 11-TV, reports The University released an alert around 3:30 p.m. Monday stating a person armed with a gun was seen inside Anderson Hall.  They say the suspect displayed a gun in an attempt to steal a laptop.  The suspect then fled.

They say U of M police are searching for a man described as a 20-year-old black male, around 6 feet tall and wearing a black hooded puffy jacket.

The U of M had asked students and staff on the West Bank campus to take shelter in a safe place while they investigated. At 4:00 p.m. they said their search of the West Bank was over, and people no longer need to take shelter.

According to U of M officials, police remain on alert but believe the suspect has left campus.  They say all regular classes and activities will continue as planned Monday afternoon and evening.

Police are asking anyone with information about the attempted robbery to call 911.
