American Legion and Fargo VFW Set Sights on New Legion in West Fargo

Posted: Updated:

Over fifty-thousand veterans in North Dakota and around the country and the American Legion aims to strengthen each one of these brave men and women, but over the years memberships in veteran legions have declined and now with the growing population in West Fargo, Dave Rice sees an ideal opportunity to establish something he says the community is missing....an American Legion post.

"It just kind of dawned on me West Fargo a very large city and fast growing doesn't have one and I thought it would be a prime location to try and get one started."

The need is met, but there are still challenges this legionnaire needs to face. According to the New York Times, as of the year 2000 memberships have been down by 11 percent.

However, that hasn't stopped him before.

"We have established two new American Legion posts. There is one at NDSU, North Dakota State University. There are primarily students, faculty and staff. We just had one started at UND, University of North Dakota in Grand Forks."

With West Fargo growing denser, Dave says there's no better time like the present.

"We need a minimum of 10 members to start a post to be a charter so we can officially operate as an American Legion post and we could also have transfers. If someone is a member else where but living in the West Fargo area."

He's not sure how long it will be before city veterans have another place to feel at home, but says he's certain there is strength in numbers.

American Legions are known for their commitment to mentoring kids, organizing community programming and their grassroots involvement in the legislation process both locally and nationally. The possibility of this legion coming to West Fargo, is a joint effort by the American Legion and the Fargo VFW- to find out more their next meeting will be December 17th, 7pm at the West Fargo VFW.
