The North Dakota State Bison women's basketball team (1-0) coasted to a 112-62 victory over the Mayville State University Comets (3-0) Friday, Nov. 8, in the regular season opener inside the Bison Sports Arena.
The 112 points is the most points scored by a Bison women's basketball team since the 2002-03 season, when North Dakota State defeated Omaha, 113-69.
NDSU had six players score in double-figures, led by Marena Whittle with a game-high 20 points and nine rebounds. Brooke LeMar scored 19 points on 8-of-11 shooting while Holly Johnson had 15 points. LeMar and Johnson both had eight boards for the Bison. Miki Stephenson scored 14 points, going 6-for-9 from the field. Bree Whatman had 13 points and a game-high seven assists while Emily Spier chipped in 12 points, seven boards and a game-high four blocks.
The Bison shot 55-percent from the field, going 42-of-76, and were 4-of-14 from three for 29-percent. NDSU went 24-of-29 from the free-throw line for 83-percent. The Bison out-rebounded the Comets, 56-26 and forced 17 Mayville turnovers. NDSU had 21 assists compared to just 11 turnovers in the contest.
With the win, the Bison improve their record in season-opening games to 30-19 and are now 1-0 overall.
NDSU returns to the court Thursday, Nov. 14, when they travel to Bangor, Maine to battle the Black Bears of the University of Maine. Tip-off from the Cross Insurance Center is set for 6 p.m. CT/7 p.m. ET. Air time on KVOX 740-AM "The Fan" in Fargo-Moorhead is 5:40 p.m. CT.
