Residents Voice Concerns on Building Elementary School on Ed Clapp Park

Posted: Updated:

A big question raising concerns in a Fargo neighborhood is will the school district build an elementary school at Ed Clapp Park? In case you're unfamiliar with the area, the park is right behind Carlson Library on 32nd Avenue South. The proposal seems to have some residents on edge and others optimistic. The Fargo Park District and school board met to try and find a happy medium.

"I cant think of a better place to build it."

That's what this Bluemont Lakes resident says - he lives near Ed Clapp Park where Fargo School Board and Park District plan to build a new elementary school. However, backers of the plan learned that some felt differently when nearly 90 residents signed a petition opposing the plan.

Traffic is one of the main concerns that some neighbors have.

"What percentage of those elementary students will be driven to school?", asks one resident during the meeting.

"Thirty-second street has really become a racetrack," says another.

Building a new elementary is the school district's response to free up other schools in the area from overcrowding. If built it will hold up to 500 students.

Some residents say they are on board with the school, but under certain conditions.

"We know there's a lot of smaller kids here and they would enjoy it very much, the only concern we have is the green space."

Superintendent Jeffrey Schatz of Fargo Public Schools says he's sensitive to the concerns adding 2/3 of the green space will be left untouched.

"This is one area in town where we really don't have a neighborhood school."

Schatz adds that a school should have been built in this area years ago. He and the district are hoping that it won't be long before all of the issues can be addressed and allow the project to move forward.

The land on which the proposed school would be built is currently owed by the Fargo Park District. They will hold a board meeting Tuesday where members will discuss concerns again.
