Williams Elected Mayor of Moorhead

Posted: Updated:

The new face of Moorhead: Longtime community activist Del Rae Williams has been elected mayor. She'll take over for Mark Voxland, who's been mayor for 12 years but decided not to seek re-election.

Williams won with 37% of the vote to Mike Hulett's 31%, Mark Hintermeyer's 30% and Kevin Shores' 1%. She is the first woman to hold the office.

Williams' campaign website says she is a retired CPA who has lived with her spouse and two children in Moorhead for twenty years.  She is currently the Vice President of the League of Women Voters of the Red River Valley, Treasurer for  the Friends of the Moorhead Library and a board member of Freedom Center for Independent Living, Inc.  She was previously the chair of the Moorhead Human Rights Commission and Treasurer for Moorhead Healthy Community Initiative.

Williams' term is going to be five years instead of the usual four because Moorhead voters also decided Tuesday to change the election year to even years instead of odd, to coincide with state and federal elections.

Mari Dailey, Jim Haney, Brenda Elmer and Chuck Hendrickson were elected to the Moorhead City Council.
