John's Jobs: Costco Manager

Posted: Updated:

It's a job that requires a lot of walking, some food sampling and you need to be a people person. Put those clues together and you get the manager of Costco in West Fargo.

This week, that's our John Trierweiler's job. A store that employees over 150, has about 2,000 - 3,000 visitors on an average day, all while shopping and working in a 154,000 square foot warehouse.

Started in 1983, Costco now serves more than 70 million card holders and has 643 stores world wide and growing.

Overseeing all that, is like being the mayor of a small city and it all happens on what store manager, Angela Bauer, calls a "race track."

"We're walking the race track and we're just looking to make sure that things are coordinating, that people are in their departments, that the members are being assisted as they need it, we have the right item, at the right place, at the right time," said Bauer.

Being the manager isn't just about stopping by and visiting your departments, it's about washing your hands and helping out. Even trying those famous samples is a part of your job.

"Make sure the quality of the product is made appropriately, that it's a good solid two bite sample," said Bauer.

From making pizzas, to trying sample after sample, even helping out in the pharmacy or tire shop. Being the manager of a Costco will keep you on your toes.

So does our John Trierweiler have what it takes to actually be the manager?

"I think you do, I really do. We got to work on you getting fed before you start the job though," said Bauer.
