Hawley, MN Welcomes New Police Chief

Posted: Updated:

People in Hawley, Minnesota, got to meet the new leader of their police force on Thursday.  Police Chief Jimmy Macon shook hands and answered questions during an open house welcome on Halloween night.

Macon's most recent position was as a lieutenant of the Niceville, Florida police department. Niceville is a community of about 12,000 on the panhandle of Florida. He says he is a good fit for Hawley.

"I basically want to come in and be a community police. I mean, I'm accessible to everyone. I don't want them thinking just because you're the chief of police you're above everybody because we're not. We're human just like everybody else. I want to get to know everyone in the community and I want to do everything I can to keep the community safe."

Macon's background includes more than 20 years in the military and 7 years as a youth officer. He was named the national Youth Officer of the Year among candidates from 37 states.

He says although he's from the south he has lived in several areas so the cold weather won't be a problem.

"I was in the military for 21 and a half years and I've been stationed in quite a few places like Alaska and Korea and all those where it gets pretty cold."

Macon has a passion for community and school involvement and is very excited to make the transition to Hawley. Chief Macon has activated both a Police Reserves and Cadet Program for Adults and Students to get training and become active participants with the Hawley Police Department.

As we talked with Macon, he joked and asked that the public be patient with his strong southern accent.
