Getting To Know The Mayoral Candidates

Posted: Updated:

People in Moorhead will be electing a new mayor. Four candidates are in the running after longtime Mayor Mark Voxland said he was stepping down.

But before next week's vote, on Tuesday November 5th, Valley News Live Teams Kristi Larson talked to them about why they want to represent the city.

One candidate who didn't put her name into the election until the last day is Del Rae Williams.

Williams says she wants to listen to the demographic that dominates the city, to keep young people in the area, and choose Moorhead as a place to raise their families. Williams says the city needs to make a change to make the college students feel more welcome, and adjust to make things easier on them.

She makes it a point that she will always be listening to the people by making a time each month to meet with the community and talk about issues.

"We have done some things that we've taken risks at that didn't work, and I think people are more open to that if they were part of that decision." Williams says.

Listening to the people of Moorhead is something that her opponents agree with.

"I think that's important that we rely on the citizens to help the council and the mayor move through complex issues." says Mark Hintermeyer.

Hintermeyer says he wants to continue to develop the Moorhead area for economic growth. He has served the people already as a council member for the past 8 years, and now says he is ready to take on the role as mayor.

"I think they recognize that I'm looking out for the best interest in Moorhead and making sure we can do what we can as soon as we can." Hintermeyer says.

Another mayoral candidate is Kevin Shores who isn't new to the race. On the ballot again, the first thing Shores wants to do is handle the issue of decriminalization of cannabis in the city. Shores also says he would incorporate the community in his roll as mayor.

"I want to be all about the community, and I want to be selected for their benefit."

All the candidates say it's important to come out and vote on Tuesday November 5th, for the person you feel will best represent the community.

Michael Hulett wasn't available to talk with Valley News Live on Monday, but he and all the candidates will be on the 6:30 Point of View show on KX4 on Tuesday October 29th.

Learn more about the candidates as they join Chris Berg for a live debate!
