The University of Northern Iowa football team fell in its third straight overtime game against the South Dakota State Jackrabbits, 37-34. UNI is 4-4 overall and 0-4 in MVFC play.
Tyler Sievertsen knocked in a 25-yard field goal in the first overtime and a 23-yard field goal in the second overtime, but SDSU was able to convert a touchdown on its second overtime offensive possession to come away with the win.
Austin Sumner found Brandon Hubert in the end zone for a 14-yard reception to seal the double-overtime victory for the Jackrabbits.
Sawyer Kollmorgen finished the game 30-40-0 for a season-high 306 yards and three touchdowns. David Johnson notched 65 yards on the ground and 48 through the air for 113 all-purpose yards. Zach Cutkomp finished with a career high 11 tackles while Max Busher grabbed 10.
Sievertsen put UNI on the scoreboard first after knocking in a 40-yard field goal with 10:30 on the clock in the first quarter. The drive burned 4:30 off the clock for 10 plays and 52 yards.
South Dakota State took a 7-3 lead over the Panthers with 2:13 left in the first quarter when Jackrabbit defensive back Je Ryan Butler returned a punt for an 80-yard touchdown return. SDSU added to its lead with 9:50 left in the second quarter when Sumner found Jason Schneider in the end zone for a three-yard passing touchdown. The drive took 5:10 off the clock for 10 plays and 72 yards.
Sievertsen cut the SDSU lead to 14-6 with 7:04 left in the first half when he hit a 41-yard field goal for his second made field goal of the game. The drive took 2:46 off the clock for eight plays and 42 yards.
UNI made it a one-point-game with 1:09 left in the second quarter when Kollmorgen linked up with Kevin Vereen Jr. for a 13-yard receiving touchdown to make the score 14-13. Taking 3:41 off the clock, the drive accumulated 11 plays and 67 yards.
Kollmorgen finished the half 17-21-0 for 143 yards and one touchdown with Vereen Jr. leading the team through the air with 43 yards and one touchdown. Isaac Ales led the Panther defense during his first start of the season, notching seven tackles in the first half.
The Jackrabbits opened scoring in the second half when Zach Zenner rushed into the end zone for a 17-yard rushing touchdown to put SDSU up 21-13. The drive ended with 11:38 left in the third quarter, ticking 3:16 off the clock for eight plays and 73 yards.
UNI cut the SDSU lead to one-point again with 9:22 on the clock in the third quarter. Evan Williams 12-yard receiving touchdown made the score 21-20, burning 2:04 off the clock for six plays and 45 yards.
With 5:48 left in the third quarter, Braden Lehman notched his first career touchdown when Kollmorgen found him open down field for a 38-yard reception. The Panthers went for two-points instead of the field goal, converting off a pass to Shawn Rush to put UNI up 28-21. The drive took 1:21 off the clock for five plays and 77 yards.
SDSU was able to tie the game 28-28 with 1:17 left in the third quarter. Sumner threw a 10-yard pass to Brandon Hubert in the end zone, ending an eight play, 73 yard drive that took up 4:23 of game time.
Both UNI and SDSU remained scoreless in the fourth quarter, eventually forcing the game into overtime.
