Electrical Wiring Started Fire at Historic Home

Posted: Updated:

FRIDAY UPDATE

FARGO, ND - The Fargo Fire Department has determined the fire origin and cause of a house fire that happened in South Fargo Thursday morning.  It happened at 1421 42nd Avenue South around 5:00 a.m.

The fire appears to have started in the third floor area due to electrical wiring igniting nearby combustible construction.

The Fargo Fire Department is putting out a reminder that properly installed and maintained smoke alarms are the only thing in your home that can alert you and your family to a fire 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

ORIGINAL STORY

FARGO, ND - Fargo firefighters battled a fire at a South Fargo home Thursday morning.

Family members inside the home, smelled smoke around 5:00 a.m. and woke up to investigate. The homeowners noticed heavy smoke in their third floor attic and immediately got everyone out of the house.

Two adults, two children and the family bunny were all able to get out of the house safely.  Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke and flames coming from the attic and immediately scrambled to put the fire out.

The house is located at 1421 42nd Ave. South, set back away from University Drive off on its own. The nearest fire hydrant is 700-800 feet away and caused a small challenge for firefighters having to run extra hose to get water on the fire.

The well constructed Victorian style home, also gave firefighters a challenge with its plaster and lathe construction. Making it hard for crews to knock down and cut through walls allowing them to get to all of the fire.

The Red Cross and Salvation Army are helping the family. Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the third floor attic and tarp the family's belongings below, helping prevent further water and smoke damage.

The cause of the fire is under investigation but the homeowners suspect since the house was built in 1895, old wiring may be to blame.
