Growing Family Faces Fight With Cancer

Posted: Updated:

A scare for a Mahnomen, Minnesota woman when she found out she had Cancer while she was pregnant.

After a quick cesarean section to ensure the baby's safety, the new mom is going through chemotherapy to fight the disease. Valley News Team's Kristi Larson talked with the family who says they are using faith to help them through their struggles.

"So I went in and they drew my blood and then next thing I knew I was being shipped to Fargo and I didn't know what was going on."  Whittni Johnson thinks back to just over a month ago, "Just instantly start crying because you're pregnant and you start to worry about your unborn child."

Whittni now holds her baby girl Aubree who is now just over 5 weeks old. No cancer was passed on to her, a sigh of relief for the family.

"Luckily I was 36 weeks pregnant, and she wasn't affected by any of it." Whittni says with a smile.

Now the family of four has a tough journey ahead. Whittni was diagnosed with Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia (APL) and she now has to go through another round of chemo to try and beat the cancer.

"They said that this chemo isn't as strong as the first chemo I had, so I shouldn't get as sick." she says.

But it's not just physical problems but also finical problems as the family faces growing medical bills.

"Immediately right after I found out she was diagnosed, I called my job and took time off, so as of right now there's no income." Mike Johnson says.

But the family is rich in one thing, faith.

"The power of prayer really helps us, helped us so far, that's the main thing." Mike says hugging their son Ayden.

The Johnson's say if Whittni wasn't pregnant she may not of gone to the doctor and caught her high risk cancer in time, that's why they call Aubree a miracle baby and gave her a special middle name.

"We decided faith." Whittni says looking down at her baby girl.

It's something this family has a lot of to help them through this time.

To help this family, they have an account set up in Whittni's name at First National Bank in Mahnomen, MN.

There are also a two benefits being held for the family, the first is November 2nd at the American Legion in Mahnomen, and the second is on November 16th at the American Legion in Bagley, MN.
