Healthier Me: Blogging Can Be Good Medicine for Cancer Patients

Posted: Updated:

Blogging may be good medicine, according to a new study. A well known Sanford Health oncologist is encouraging her patients to start a journal.

Dr. Shelby Terstriep says you can't have physical health without emotional health, and she says documenting what you are going through can help. She encourages her breast cancer patients to journal about their experiences -- whether it's online or in a notebook.

Dr. Terstriep says a recent study followed 44 breast cancer patients. They were taught to blog about their cancer journey. The study found after six months -- the patients who blogged had better emotional health.

Dr. Shelby Terstriep says, "sharing your story is so important because I think you learn when you start to read you see the tough times, but you also see the glimmer of hope. I think you feel enveloped with all of the love and support. By writing those down -- you can look at all of the nice things people have done."

Dr. Terstriep says talking openly and honestly with friends and family about a cancer diagnosis is critically important. She says blogging or journalling is a simple way for many people to share what they are feeling. She says it's also alright to be private. Not everyone wants to open their blog to the public, but she says it's still beneficial to blog or journal, even if you keep it to yourself.
