Breckenridge, MN Home Heavily Damaged by Fire

Posted: Updated:

Fire investigators are looking for the cause of an early morning house fire that heavily damaged a Breckenridge, MN home.

The fire started early Wednesday morning at a home on the 800 block of 11th Street North.  Smoke alarms alerted the family to the fire and the two adults, three teenagers, a dog and a cat were able to get out safely.

Homeowner, Alan Comeau, describes getting out of the house as in-describable and frightening.

"You see it all the time and you think god I bet I could get through the smoke but it's a whole different story, you suck it in you can't breathe you cant see it takes your breath away, you don't want to breathe," said Comeau.

The home is a total loss and The American Red Cross is providing shelter for the family in a hotel, along with clothing and food.

The Red Cross says they will be reaching out to other community partners to help the family recover.

The investigation of the cause is focusing on the outside of the house on the front porch.  Fire officials say it may have been caused by a cigarette.
