West Acres Tightens Evacuation Plan After Kenyan Mall Massacre

Posted: Updated:

Frightening footage, caught on surveillance cameras was just released today of the mall massacre almost a month ago, that left at least 67 people dead and at least 150 others injured in Nairobi, Kenya. It's a frightening event, Kirby Sandvik of American Security and Protection says as the mall's primary security provider,  he never wants to see happen.

"When you see people like in this video here, scrambling, screaming. It is heart wrenching."

The mall contacted the Valley News Live newsroom and asked to get their hands on the video.

"It's unfortunate that it happened and it's not a video that we wanted to see but it's a video we felt like we needed to see, to see how things went," says Sandvik.

Without excuses, he says he's preparing for the worst.

"We have an active shooter plan in place and we're always upgrading it."

He took me on a brief tour of a new master evacuation plan...

"we do have corner  doors that do lead outside or into the back area where people can get out of any situation that might happen."

Security officials say they have no choice but to be prepared in life or death situations. It's something the shoppers say they can also agree with.

Nicholas Morris, a local West Acre shopper says, "I think it's very important especially in the world we live in today. It's violent and people have guns."

"As a mother you instinctively go after your children," confidently says a mother with her young daughter.

Kirby says the situation is unlikely, but when gunman or terrorists go on deadly rampages, training and preparation can make the difference in the seconds leading to life or death.
