Starting Over After The Fire

Posted: Updated:

A family is pulling scraps from their home after a fire broke out Wednesday night in Underwood, Minnesota.

An electrical wire started a fire in the Johnson's dining room, and luckily the 5 people sleeping in the home at the time all made it out safe. The family talked with Valley News Teams Kristi Larson Friday, they say they have to start over with hardly any money or a place to go.

"Both of us got up at the same time, and just smelt smoke." Jason Johnson describes.

He sits in a small room in the Fergus Falls Comfort Inn with his family who he made sure got out of the house.

"I had no concern for myself, I had to make sure my family was out." Jason says.

All members and their pets made it out, but they lost all of their belongings.

"The situation right now is what we have in this room is what we have. And what we have has been donated to us." Jason says looking around the small hotel room.

Back at their home from the outside the damage looks small, but stepping indoors the walls and windows are painted black from smoke, toys and furniture are melted, and the floors are destroyed.

"It rips your life apart, and you have nothing left." Jason says as he walks through the rubbish.

Going up the stairs and to the left is 7 week old Emmah's room, where her father Dustin Anderson ran back into the house to get her. The family says they felt he was in there for a long time searching through the thick smoke.

"There was so much smoke, and it was just so black that he was disoriented from the smoke, it took him a couple minutes to get down." Jason says.

The family is thankful they are all together, but Jason now worries about getting his family back on their feet, especially for baby Emmah.

"We gotta find something to get a roof over our head again, and try to start over." Jason says shaking his head.

He's looking for help for his families future.

The family says they are worried about financial struggles ahead, and trying to find a different home.

A fund has been set up at Farmers State Bank in Underwood for the family. The bank says money and donations can be made to either their Underwood or Dalton branch, or mailed to the address below.
