2014 Beargrease Dog Sled Race Cancelled

Posted: Updated:

(KBJR) The 2013 winner of the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon, Nathan Schroeder, said Thursday night he's disappointed to hear the news that the 2014 race is canceled.

This time it's not the weather, but lack of funding.

Race President, Pat Olson, said Thursday afternoon that the thought of not having the race is a tough decision and "breaks her heart."

She told KBJR 6 & Range 11's Kevin Jacobsen on the phone the organization received less than expected funding to put on January's 400 mile race.

Olson also said the weather during the past two years, which canceled the 2012 event and postponed this year's race, is also a factor in why the race is in jeopardy.

She suggested many people may be directing their money other place, especially in the aftermath of the 2012 flood. Olson said that they would still like to try and raise more funds for the event.

According to the marathon's Facebook page, a number of entrants have registered for the mid-distance race. However, Olson said if the full marathon is scrapped, the mid-distance race will also be canceled.

She said it wouldn't be "cost effective" to do one race without the other.

Olson said they would use the next year to re-group and start planning for the 2015 race.

"I hope they can find the funding in 2015. I've made a career choice to race at the Gichigami race then travel to Alaska and run three races up there," Schroeder said in a statement.

The board is expected to vote on Monday whether they will continue to raise funds and put on the race.

This would be the third time in its history the race has been canceled.
