Donuts Help Drive Area Food Drive

Posted: Updated:

Volunteers are calling out to their community to step up and help families in need, as some of the shelves at the area food pantry sit empty.

The number of people calling the Red River Valley home is growing, and with that comes a growing need for food.

Thursday donuts were helping feed the drive to do good in the Wahpeton-Breckenridge area.

"You know instead of just relying on everyone doing it out of the goodness of their heart, we try and entice them a little bit with them donuts!" laughs Scott Thorsteinson.

In a small trailer, is a group of people with big hearts.

"My husband had told of how he'd gone on a disturbance call, and in the cupboard for the kids all they had was a bag of rice. Since then, every time I teach we have a food drive of some type." Beth Thorsteinson says.

With each drop-off of shelf goods, there was a treat being handed out.

"While we're taking and collecting food, why not give food?" Beth laughs.

As the day started, few donations were brought out, but taking a look inside the pantry where it will be donated any amount is welcome.

"Right now the food drives are starting to pick up which really helps a lot." says Karen Stocklund who runs the pantry.

The shelves feed 125 families each month. They get to pick up a cart full of food, which comes to weigh about 100 pounds.

"Last week when I was here these shelves were empty, but there was a food drive that came in yesterday, so I mean look what just one food drive will do!" Karen exclaims.

A generous gift back to the community, made even sweeter with a mini bag of donuts.

"I mean a little bit of effort and a little bit of expense goes a long ways." Scott says with a smile on his face.

Food will be collected until 7 Thursday night, but donations of any kind are always welcomed to be dropped off directly to the Wahpeton Food Pantry.
