Clinical Research Company Moves in Former Dilworth Wal-Mart

Posted: Updated:

It's been on the table for six years now. What to do with an oversized vacant building, once a Wal-Mart.  It's an issue City Manager, Stan Thurlow isn't alone in facing. Many cities across the U.S. are puzzled over the same question.

"It's a challenge to find someone to take on an 120,000 square foot building so over the years the gentleman who owned it has leased it over time but it's kept up an appearance, which is good. Some smaller towns you see with old Wal-Mart's, it's a very blighting situation."

Sooner or later Dilworth found their answer in Axis Clinicals, a now global clinical research company. The city announced them as their newest long-term business partner. Its news the city is ecstatic to share.

"This thing is not only good for Dilworth but it is good for the entire region."

And as for offering advice to other towns that are mind boggled about what to do with oversized buildings, Thurlow says they just got dealt a lucky card.

"It's very difficult to get the right match. I would say we were fortunate to land them."

The Axis Clinicals facility will hold 350 beds and is expected to bring 50 to 100 "moderate to high income jobs" to the area. It's the first of its kind in the U.S. and renovations should be finished come this April.
