How to Be a Master Pumpkin Carver

Posted: Updated:

Ever wonder how to make your pumpkin standout from the rest and do more than just triangle eyes.

Vanessa Morken, artist and teacher at Oak Grove Lutheran Elementary, was happy to share some unique tips and advice while turning you into a pro.

The first step is not being afraid and having a plan with what you want to do to your pumpkin. Once you've got a plan, you can trace out your design from paper by taping it to the pumpkin and then punching holes around the design.

Removing the "guts" from your pumpkin can be tricky, but using a canning lid can be one of the best ways to get all the seeds and gunk out.

After removing the paper, you'll see those holes in the shape of your design. Simply cut the shape out and polish it up. Morken, advises uses a linoleum cutter to shape and edge your design.

You can also use that same cutter or pottery tools to carve different designs onto the face of your pumpkin without cutting all the way through it.

Morken, also suggests dipping your pumpkin in bleach to help persevere it longer and keep it from rotting while it sits out.
