Engineers Say Fargo Should Pass on Tunnel Idea

Posted: Updated:

FARGO, N.D. (AP) - Engineers for the City of Fargo say the commission should scrap plans for a $44 million tunnel on a downtown street.

The 740-foot tunnel was proposed as part of a flood protection plan in front of City Hall. The city has been forced to put up temporary levees on the street to hold back Red River floodwaters in four of the last five years, but only 23 percent of about 200 people surveyed during a public comment period liked the idea of a tunnel.

The most popular option, receiving 37 percent approval, would shift the street away from the river. The city would pay about $23 million to buy and remove three buildings.

The city commission is scheduled to vote on the issue Monday.
