North Dakota State had two players recognized as national performers of the week by the College Football Performance Awards on Sunday, Oct. 13.
NDSU junior Zach Vraa was named FCS National Wide Receiver of the Week after catching five passes for a career-high 179 yards and two touchdowns in North Dakota State's 41-26 homecoming win over Missouri State. He caught TD passes of 36 and 23 yards and had two other catches go for 56 and 52 yards.
Bison senior Ryan Smith was named FCS National Punt Returner of the Week. Smith, the Missouri Valley Football Conference Special Teams Player of the Week, turned his first punt return of the year into an 85-yard touchdown to give the Bison a 7-0 lead in the first quarter. He is the Division I active leader with three career punt return TDs. Smith, a senior from Wahpeton, N.D., was North Dakota State's second-leading runner with 142 all-purpose yards in the 41-26 homecoming win over Missouri State, which gave NDSU its conference-record 15th straight victory.
North Dakota State (6-0, 3-0 MVFC) is scheduled to play Southern Illinois at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, at Saluki Stadium in Carbondale, Ill. The Salukis are 4-3 overall and 2-1 in the MVFC after their 24-17 overtime win at Northern Iowa.
