A glimpse of living without a home

Posted: Updated:

As the Fargo cold starts to creep in, many of us are putting on a jacket, or turning up the heat.

But for some, that's not an option.

According to the city of Fargo around 800 people in the F-M area are affected by homelessness on any given night.

Imagine what it would be like to call these streets home.

"you don't know what your next meal, or your next place your going to sleep will be. It's hard to be homeless."

10 year old Madison doesn't have to imagine.

"tonight we are fasting for 24 hours, and we are going to sleep in box outside."

Just to get a taste of what it's like on the streets.

"I'm hoping to learn what it's like to be homeless."

Learning by trading in their beds, not everyone has a nice warm house--

"it's really cold outside."

Imagine what it would be like to be alone on these streets.

"I would be really scared, my mom is sleeping outside in a box tonight and I am really happy."

And to be without food.

"you kind of forget that you are hungry, but then they started talking about food, and that was kind frustrating"

But these girls have learned something.

"I realize what they go through everyday."

The next morning, they have learned to empathize.

"it was really cold out last night, and getting up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom got a little scary"

"it's pretty cold out there, but I have slept outside before"

"we are helping the homeless population shop"

"we have to find all the stuff that we need"

"clothes!"

Empathizing, one pair of shoes, at a time.

"are you looking for heals or flats?"

"I'm having a good time."

It's a job, well done.

"thank you for realizing that these are people and they have names."

And now, they don't have to imagine anymore.
