Sophomore linemates Rocco Grimaldi and Drake Caggiula each potted their second goal of the weekend as seventh-ranked North Dakota battled Vermont to a 2-2 overtime tie Saturday night at Ralph Engelstad Arena.
The goals by Grimaldi and Caggiula staked UND to a 2-0 lead after the first period, but the Catamounts salvaged the tie on second-period goals by Robert Polesello and Chris McCarthy, the latter coming shorthanded.
After nothing was settled in overtime, the two teams staged an exhibition shootout with UND winning 2-1 on goals by Grimaldi and junior Michael Parks. The game, as a non-conference matchup, officially went into the record books as a tie.
Sophomore goalie Zane Gothberg made his first start of the season and stopped 25 of 27 shots. His Vermont counterpart, freshman Mike Santaguida, stopped 31 of the 33 shots he faced.
UND went 1-for-5 on the power play while killing all six Vermont chances.
UND will open National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) play next weekend at second-ranked Miami.
