Khat Showing Up in the Valley

Posted: Updated:

You can chew it, smoke it and even make tea out of it. It's a shrub scientifically known as Catha edulis or better known as khat. Sheila Kapaun, a licensed alcohol and drug counselor at the Share House says that the growing refugee population in the Fargo-Moorhead area could be the reason why it's suddenly popping up here in the valley.

"there's been some exposure to the general population but at the same time it is problematic in this country." says Sheila.

The sighs to look for according to Kapuan she says, "some over activity, hyper activity and talkativeness"

Khat is not a deadly drug if taken in it's pure form but...

"it has a psychological dependence after a long period of using."

Meaning there is potential for addiction and abuse.

Sheila says Khat has been evaluated in a few of her patients and is aware of the growing concern.
