Churches Targeted in Burglary Spree

Posted: Updated:

Weekends are a tame when many people go to church. But, after several burglaries in Valley City, it appears some criminals do too.

Police are looking for tips on whoever broke in to four churches over a two week period, all within a few blocks of each other and all missing cash.

Valley News Team's Hope Hanselman shows us why this case is so unusual for police.

In a city where faith is strong, crime can come in mysterious ways.

"Valley City is a very community-oriented town; and if these individuals took whatever they took because they needed some assistance, they could have knocked on the door of the church. I'm sure that churches would have helped them out," Chief Fred Thompson, of the Valley City Police Department said.

Instead, Trinity Lutheran Church, Our Saviors Church, the Congregational Church and Faith Lutheran Church were stripped of cash. Whoever broke in passed up more valuable objects. That's a crime Thompson says wouldn't typically go down this way.

"Those tend to happen more on the weekends," Chief Thompson said of business burglaries, "when people expect businesses to be closed. But, these are churches. Churches are open on the weekends. So, it's kind of an unusual event."

Few churches reported a forced entry. In most cases, an unsecured door was to blame.

You'll still find faith on nearly every corner around here, but more of these door are now being locked.

"Valley City is a very community-oriented place, which is a great place to live, but unfortunately no matter how nice the town you live in, there are still people that want to take advantage."

The Valley City Public Library was also hit on this spree.

The director says whoever it is knew their way around, knowing where the cash was kept.
