Now is the Time to Get Your Flu Shot

Posted: Updated:

If you haven't already, now is the time to get your flu shot in preparation for January and February, typically the worst months to catch the flu.

Americans get the flu every year, in-fact about 200,000 people end up being hospitalized because of it. In the worse cases the flu can also kill you, it was even the eighth leading cause of death in males in 2009.

However, it's easy to protect yourself and important. About 135 million flu vaccinations are available for this years flu season and the CDC recommends that everyone over the age of six months gets vaccinated.

"By getting vaccinated, we are protecting ourselves, our families and our communities," explains Dr. Prakash Kafle, an infectious disease specialist at Essentia Health's 32nd Avenue Clinic in Fargo. "Although the flu shot is not 100 percent protective, it is still the best way to protect ourselves from influenza."

Getting your flu shot is made a little easier for you this week and into next week. Essentia Health is offering a series of flu shot blitzes in the Fargo-Moorhead area. Flu shots will be available for adults without an appointment at the following times:

  • Essentia Health-South University Clinic: Oct. 11, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Essentia Health-West Acres Clinic: Oct. 9 and 10, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Essentia Health-West Fargo Clinic: Oct. 17, from 8 a.m. to noon
  • Essentia Health-32nd Avenue Clinic: Oct. 18, from 1-4 p.m.

For those under the age of eighteen, you'll need to make an appointment with your primary health care provider.
