Sophomore outside hitter Jenni Fassbender recorded a career-high 23 kills to lead the North Dakota State volleyball team to a 3-1 victory over South Dakota State in front of 1,023 fans on Saturday evening inside the Bentson Bunker Fieldhouse. The match was the Summit League opener for both teams.
The Bison are now a perfect 7-0 in Summit League openers since joining the league in 2007. NDSU has won 10 of the last 12 over the Jackrabbits, including eight straight in Fargo.
NDSU (1-12, 1-0) received season highs in kills from freshman Emily Minnick and senior Dani DeGagne, who tallied 15 and 12 kills, respectively. Freshman setter Monica Claxton dished out 61 assists – 22 more than she had registered in any previous match this season.
The Bison hit a season-high .290 for the match while limiting SDSU to a .190 hitting percentage.
Freshman defensive specialist Emily Milligan had 21 digs, improving on her previous season-best performance by eight.
SDSU (2-11, 0-1) was led by 20 kills from sophomore Wagner Larson.
Down 7-6 to open the first set, NDSU went on a 6-1 run to open a 12-8 lead and would not trail again, winning the set 25-19.
The Bison put together an 11-1 run midway through the second set to erase a 12-9 deficit and claim the set easily, 25-18. SDSU earned its lone set victory in the third to avoid the sweep, rallying from a 22-20 deficit to win 26-24.
NDSU will travel to Grand Forks on Monday to take on North Dakota at 7 p.m.
