Man Pulls Woman from Burning Car After Crash

Posted: Updated:

Two people were hospitalized following a dramatic crash scene north of Grand Forks Sunday night. Police say 25-year-old David Jensen of Mekinock, North Dakota, was driving on North Washington Street when he pulled over to send a text message just before 10:30 p.m.

He was on the side of the road near the junction of County Road 11 with his flashers on when his vehicle was hit by a car driven by Tracy Ludwig, a 49-year-old from Fisher, Minnesota. Ludwig was traveling north when she missed the curve, crossed the center line and struck Jensen head-on.

Ludwig's vehicle started on fire after the crash. Jensen was able to pull Ludwig, who was unconscious, out of the vehicle and to safety before the vehicle was completely engulfed in flames.

Both drivers were transported to Altru Hospital in Grand Forks. Jensen was treated and released. Ludwig was admitted with non-threatening injuries. Both vehicles had to be towed from the scene.

The report from the North Dakota Highway Patrol says Ludwig is being charged with driving under the influence and charges are listed as "under investigation" for Jensen, but Lt. Aaron Hummel with the State Patrol says that is standard procedure and charges are not expected.
