North Dakota Team to Compete in Red Bull Flugtag Competition

Posted: Updated:

You probably seen the ads on TV lately, rickety flying machines making the plunge from great heights.  It's all a part of the annual Red Bull Flugtag, and it's happening this weekend in five cities across the country.

This year, a team from the valley will be participating at the event in Chicago on Saturday with a little Fargo flair.

They're called Lucky Lindegaard and the team crafted a life-size bison. As you may have guessed, the team is comprised of NDSU students. They made their mighty bison from PVC piping, hula hoops, and some paper mache.

The guys say they have the science just right to beat the 30 other teams in the competition.

"We have a pretty high-tech design that we stole from NASA," explains Thompson, North Dakota resident Andrew Galegher. "We've got a separating launch craft from out main fuselage so when we take off here, this cart, all of the wheels we're pushing from, are going to separate right there, So we're going to drop a good 50-75 pounds there. That should give us just enough lift to clear Lake Michigan."

So where did the name Lucky Lindegaard come from? It is actually the combination of the names Darren Linde and Tyler Orgaard-- two North Dakota National Guard soldiers who were killed during service in Afghanistan last year.

Lucky Lindegaard is the first team from North Dakota to be chosen to compete in the Red Bull competition. Valley News Live will keep you updated on how they do.
