Fargo Welcomes ESPN College GameDay

Posted: Updated:

Downtown Fargo is getting dressed up in green and gold as businesses prepare for a rush of fans and a huge opportunity in the national television spotlight.

The countdown is on until kickoff, and to ESPN hosting College GameDay from the streets of Fargo. Many fans are already making signs and preparing for the big event, but also many businesses are getting ready for Saturday's events.

With each shipment of College GameDay shirts coming in, the excitement level around town continues to rise.

"The hoopla of Bison Football right now is really exciting and really fun." says Kathy Luecke who was buying four memorable shirts.

"Usually College GameDay only goes to bigger schools like the U of M or Texas A&M,  it's pretty cool that they are coming here just to be involved with something bigger, even though we're a little bit of a smaller college." says NDSU student Ben Andre.

The special GameDay shirts are flying off the tables. In just two days more than 3,000 have been ordered.

"It's going to be a collectable," NDSU Bookstore Director Carol Miller says, "I mean what are the odds that ESPN GameDay are going to come back? We hope they come back that'd be great, but I think everybody wants a commemorative of some type."

But it's not just the campus and students getting ready for Saturday, many of the businesses Downtown are going to be opening up early. Sammy's Pizza will have breakfast calzones, donuts and coffee to help wake up excited fans. Just one of many businesses looking forward to having thousands of fans on the streets.

"We've already started prep by prepping extra meats, pulling extra breads, our truck order is the largest we've placed this year so far," General Manager at Erbert & Gerbert's Jessica Nichols laughs. "And we're going to staff up extra people so we'll be able to handle the large mass of people walking through the door."

From restaurants to Bison apparel stores, everyone is getting ready to show across the country what Bison Nation is all about.

"It's kind of a once in a lifetime experience, just to have the college GameDay here, getting that recognition that's awesome." Ben smiles.
