ND Oil Boom Town Says No to Homeless Shelter

Posted: Updated:

WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) - The city of Williston has denied a permit to allow homeless people to stay at a local church.

Planning and zoning director Kent Jarcki says Concordia Lutheran Church does not meet fire and safety codes to be used as a residence.

Pastor Jay Reinke declined to comment on the issue.

Williston does not have a homeless shelter.

The North Dakota Homeless Coalition has reported housing shortages in the state's oil boom communities, that have left many people struggling to find somewhere to stay.
